Color Me Human: A Poetic Tapestry of Pain, Peace, and Perseverance

Color Me Human by The Hermit (Keith Mansfield) is more than a collection of poems—it’s a spiritual and raw expression of one’s life. Major poems in this book are the guttural cry of a soul that has walked through life’s storms barefoot, collecting shards of memory, trauma, resilience, and hope along the way.

Within the pages of this book, each poem is a reflection of the observations and experiences. Whether he’s describing the isolation of depression, the burden of past trauma, or the quiet beauty of companionship, the reader is pulled not just into his words but into his world.

Rather than curating experience into something sanitized or poetic for poetry’s sake, the Hermit lays everything bare. His work speaks to raw survival through addiction, emotional torment, cultural identity, and the painful process of becoming whole. These poems do not simply describe feelings; they invite the reader to live inside them, to feel the same ache, the same nostalgia, the same flash of recognition when something unnamed finally has words.

What makes this collection especially profound is its unflinching honesty. The Hermit doesn’t sand down the jagged edges of his story. There’s no grand arc of redemption wrapped up with a tidy bow. Instead, there’s a slow evolution—a weathered strength forged from trauma and resilience. The reader walks with him through darkness, but never without glimpses of light. There are moments of brutal introspection, emotional reckoning, and ultimately, grace.

Despite the heavy subject matter, the book is not without its moments of levity or beauty. Amid the harder truths are tender tributes to loved ones, nostalgic reveries, and meditations on everyday grace. These passages serve as emotional rest stops, grounding the collection in love and gratitude.

In an age where so much art is polished, filtered, and curated for maximum appeal, Color Me Human is refreshingly human. It reminds us that imperfection is not only acceptable—it is necessary. The Hermit’s work tells us that healing does not come from avoiding pain but from walking through it with our eyes open, our hearts exposed, and our pens in hand.

If you are a seeker, a dreamer, a fighter, or simply someone trying to make peace with your past, Color Me Human will resonate deeply. This is not just a book of poetry. It is a mirror, a balm, and a call to remember that we are all beneath the pain, prejudice, and pressure, still gloriously, bruised, beautifully human.

About the Author

I was first introduced to the hermit (Keith Mansfield) via a collaboration he had done with a mutual writer friend. I went to his Facebook page and began reading his own work. I was moved by his poetry. Keith’s work is equally profound and prolific, moving, incredibly inspiring, and beautiful. I have faith that the works contained in this volume will touch a chord somewhere deep within you.
