The Czech men’s basketball team, under the guidance of head coach Lubos Barton, is preparing to defend its historic gold medal at the upcoming FISU World University Games 2025 in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.
Barton made headlines in August 2023, when he led Czechia to a nail-biting 69–67 win over Brazil in the final at the FISU Games in Chengdu, China. The victory marked Czechia’s first-ever gold in men’s basketball at the Universiade.
Reflecting on the dramatic ending, Barton shared his mindset: “I try to bring energy without letting emotions take over, because that’s when poor decisions happen. Even when we missed a crucial free throw, I saw a strategic advantage, as their coach couldn’t stop the clock. Still, it was nerve-wracking—I’m just relieved their last shot didn’t go in.”
The final’s standout performance came from Jan Zídek, who posted 24 points and 9 rebounds, including four three-pointers, in a display of both personal excellence and team execution. Czechia’s well-balanced game plan, composure, and precise play reflected Barton’s coaching values: calm under pressure, structured preparation, and mental toughness.
Back from Valpo, Ready for Another Shot
Having spent the past two seasons coaching in the NCAA at Valparaiso University, Barton returns to international duty with fresh experience and perspective. A former EuroLeague player himself, Barton is blending American and European coaching philosophies to build cohesive, competitive squads.
Looking ahead to FISU 2025, Barton is focused on continuity and sharp preparation: “I plan to bring back six core players from the championship team. That familiarity is key. With only two weeks to prepare, the intensity and focus have to be there from day one.”
This new chapter is about more than defending a title—it’s about building a team culture, developing young talent, and reinforcing Czech basketball’s reputation on the global stage.
“We didn’t have the most talented group in Chengdu, but they were mentally and physically resilient. My role was to provide clarity and confidence when it mattered most. Ultimately, it was the players who made the winning plays.”
Tough Competition in Group C
The 2025 tournament draw has placed Czechia in Group C, alongside Brazil, Poland, and the Philippines. Barton believes the opener against Poland will be pivotal for the group standings.
