MACON, MS – August 11, 2026 – Mississippi author Maranda Lowery Sherrod announces the release of her new book, From the Valley to the Hills: “Will Yourself to Lift,” a Day-by-Day Experience, a personal reflection on recovery, resilience, and rebuilding life after serious illness and loss.

The book draws from Sherrod’s decade-long health journey, including complications from Stage 3 Sarcoidosis and relapsing Pericarditis, as well as multiple open-heart surgeries. It explores how individuals navigate periods of physical, emotional, and financial hardship, and how daily choices can shape recovery over time.

In 2014, Sherrod underwent her second open-heart surgery and faced a prolonged recovery that resulted in the loss of her career, financial stability, and sense of identity.

“Recovery became a day-by-day process for me,” Sherrod said. “There were moments when I had to make a conscious decision to keep going, even when it was difficult.”

Rather than presenting a step-by-step formula, the book focuses on lived experience and reflection, emphasizing persistence during periods of uncertainty. Sherrod describes the concept behind her work as “willing yourself to lift,” or making the intentional decision to continue moving forward through adversity.

The book also references historical and biblical figures such as John of Patmos and the prophet Ezekiel to illustrate themes of endurance, isolation, and perseverance. Sherrod connects these examples with modern stories of resilience, including public figures who overcame repeated setbacks before achieving success.

In addition to her health journey, Sherrod has rebuilt her professional life as the founder of J&M Creations and The Youth Lives Matter Organization, a nonprofit based in Macon, Mississippi focused on youth development and community support.

“When I lost my career and stability, I had to reconsider what rebuilding my life looked like,” Sherrod said. “Over time, I learned that rebuilding often starts with small, intentional steps.”

From the Valley to the Hills is now available for purchase.

Sherrod will host a community discussion and book signing at the Noxubee County Library on Saturday, October 28.
