Science jewelry builds on enthusiasm for STEM, says founder.

Eugene, Ore. – April 28, 2022 – Boutique Academia, a STEM-focused jewelry company based in the Pacific Northwest, has created new necklace and earring designs based on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The JWST pieces are the latest science jewelry offerings from this woman-owned-and-operated company. “I wanted to highlight the excitement and enthusiasm around the deep space images we’ll be getting from the JWST,” says Maile Urbancic, founder and CEO of Boutique Academia. “The front of the necklace is based on the iconic mirror pattern of the telescope. The back is engraved with the location of the JWST within our solar system, at the L2 Lagrange point.”

The JWST was successfully launched in December of 2021 after 25 years of development. It is the most powerful space telescope ever launched and will be able to capture images of objects 10 to 100 times fainter than were visible to the Hubble Space Telescope. Designed for infrared astronomy, the JWST will be able to peer back to the very beginnings of the universe, to the first stars and galaxies. “As a teenager I loved seeing photos from Hubble. In high school, I even had posters on my wall of galaxies 12 billion light years away that had been imaged by Hubble. I’m so excited for the next generation of young people to experience the thrill of new space discoveries,” says Urbancic.

Urbancic created her STEM jewelry company in 2010 after searching for math-themed apparel and accessories. “I was a math major and I think math is beautiful. I wanted to show my enthusiasm for STEM in the same way a sports fan wears their favorite team’s jersey. It’s a form of self-expression.” She deliberately includes many scientifically accurate details in her designs so that pieces can also act as conversation starters, spreading enthusiasm for scientific topics.

In addition to facilitating a way for people to visually convey their love of STEM, part of Boutique Academia’s mission is to support worthy causes. This award-winning company has donated thousands of dollars to the Trevor Foundation, supports fundraisers for high school and college clubs, and contributes to organizations that serve refugees.

Headquartered in Eugene, Oregon, Boutique Academia began in the corner of a student family apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of the company’s jewelry pieces are made in-house, while others are sourced from artists around the globe. Boutique Academia now wholesales to museum stores across the United States and has retail sales worldwide at
