Culture No Longer Needs Us to Copy Ideas Forward—What Happens Next?
For thousands of years, every story, belief, invention, and tradition depended on people to carry it into the future. Today, that assumption has changed. Ideas no longer rely solely on human minds to survive, spread, or evolve. In The Great Inversion, Dutch writer and technology professional Jordi ter Woord examines one of the defining shifts of the modern age, asking what remains uniquely human when machines can create, remix, and distribute culture at unprecedented speed.
Rather than offering another warning about technology or encouraging readers to disconnect from the digital world, The Great Inversion explores a more fundamental question. If artificial intelligence has dramatically lowered the cost of creating information, what becomes truly valuable? Ter Woord argues that the answer is attention. In an era overflowing with limitless content, human attention has become the scarce resource, and choosing what deserves that attention may be the most meaningful decision we make.
Drawing on philosophy, psychology, history, media studies, and artificial intelligence, the book follows humanity’s journey from ancient oral traditions and the invention of writing to the printing press, social media, algorithmic feeds, and generative AI. Along the way, it reveals how ideas compete for survival, how digital platforms reshape our understanding of ourselves, and why the internet increasingly feels like a mirror reflecting our desires, fears, and habits back at us.
Accessible without sacrificing depth, The Great Inversion speaks to readers interested in technology, culture, philosophy, and the future of human creativity. Rather than focusing on what machines can do, it explores what people must decide to preserve as technology continues to transform how ideas are created and shared.
