New Cody Moxam Scholarship Awards $1,000 to Students Connecting Biomedical Engineering With Mental Health

July 27 21:34 2026

TUCSON, Ariz. – July 27, 2026 – The Cody Moxam Scholarship is now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students pursuing biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a related field. The award provides $1,000 to one student whose academic goals bring engineering and science together with human health, with preference given to applicants focused on mental health, behavioral health, addiction recovery, neuromodulation, mindfulness, cancer survivorship, rehabilitation or patient-centered care.

Applications are due by May 31, 2027, and full details are available at codyamoxamscholarship.com.

The scholarship honors Cody Andrew Moxam’s commitment to mental well-being, mindfulness, recovery, and compassionate healthcare. His career reflects a holistic view of health, one that recognizes the deep connection between scientific innovation, mental wellness, community support and human flourishing. Students who hope to design medical technologies, neuroengineering solutions, digital health tools or research-driven interventions may be especially strong candidates, particularly if their work aims to improve quality of life for underserved or vulnerable populations navigating physical, emotional or behavioral health challenges.

“Cody’s path shows what can happen when technical training is paired with genuine care for people,” said Brenda Grove, outreach manager for the Cody Moxam Scholarship. “We created this award to support students who see engineering as a way to improve lives, especially for patients who are too often overlooked. We want to hear from applicants who are already putting that mindset into practice.”

About Cody Moxam

Cody Moxam is a physician-scientist in training pursuing his MD/PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Neuroengineering at the University of Arizona, Tucson College of Medicine. He holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, where he developed a real-time EEG-based brain-state decoder for closed-loop neuromodulation under the mentorship of Dr. Nitish Thakor, along with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder. His research spans personalized repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for major depression, pediatric concussion, long COVID, and substance use disorders, with multiple manuscripts currently under review.

Moxam’s record of service runs alongside his research. He co-designed CU Boulder’s Mindful Campus Program and the “Flourishing, Belonging, and Liberation” course, volunteered at a free clinic serving unhoused patients, and supported addiction recovery as a Behavioral Health Technician at a residential recovery facility and through the CU Collegiate Recovery Center. He is a recipient of the University of Arizona MD/PhD Full Scholarship and the CU Arts and Sciences GOLD Scholarship, an honor awarded annually to just two students for academic excellence and leadership.

How to Apply

By the May 31, 2027, deadline, applicants must be confirmed and enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably in biomedical engineering. As part of the application, students will submit a 750- to 1,000-word essay describing a biomedical engineering challenge or unmet healthcare need that inspires them. The essay should explain how their academic experiences, research, design projects, clinical exposure, community involvement, or personal experiences have shaped their interest in addressing that challenge.

Strong essays will identify a specific healthcare problem or patient population that deserves greater attention, show how the applicant’s experiences have prepared them to contribute, and highlight a project or service activity that demonstrates initiative and creativity. Applicants should also describe their long-term goals in biomedical engineering and how they hope their work will improve human health. The selection committee is particularly interested in students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, innovation, perseverance, ethical leadership, and a desire to translate engineering advances into meaningful real-world outcomes.
