DIN 3202 F4, DIN 3202 F5 and BS5163 Resilient Seated Gate Valve: Key Differences and Selection Guide

Resilient seated non‑rising stem gate valves are widely adopted in municipal drinking‑water distribution, sewage networks and water renovation projects across Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Commonwealth countries. DIN 3202 F4 gate valve, DIN 3202 F5 gate valve and BS5163 gate valve represent three mainstream international standards for flanged soft‑seal gate valves. Many project purchasers often face costly installation errors due to confusing face‑to‑face length, flange dimensions and application scope of these three standards. Understanding their core distinctions helps avoid wrong spection procurement and on‑site assembly failures.

DIN 3202‑F4 and DIN 3202‑F5 originate from German standard DIN 3202, now harmonized under EN 558‑1 European standard, both fitted with DIN‑EN1092‑2 PN10/PN16 flanges. The main difference between F4 and F5 lies in face‑to‑face structure length. DIN F4 is short‑pattern design, compact in overall dimension, ideal for old‑pipeline replacement projects where installation space is limited. DIN F5 is long‑pattern type with thicker valve body and larger internal cavity, delivering better rigidity and stability for new‑build water pipelines with frequent pressure fluctuation. Both F4 and F5 valves commonly use ductile iron GGG50 body and EPDM rubber‑coated wedge for clean water service below 80℃.

BS5163 is the British national standard specially formulated for water‑works gate valves, popular in UK, Africa and Middle‑East Commonwealth projects. It owns independent face‑to‑face dimension which matches neither DIN F4 nor F5. Its flange follows BS4504 standard; bolt circle and hole size cannot directly interchange with DIN‑EN1092‑2 flanges. Even if DN size and pressure rating PN10/PN16 are identical, DIN F4/F5 valves cannot be mounted into existing BS5163 pipeline slots, and vice versa. For refurbishment of legacy British‑standard water networks, BS5163 compliant gate valves must be specified.

The following table summarizes critical parameters for quick reference:

Item DIN 3202‑F4 DIN 3202‑F5 BS5163
Standard System German DIN / EN558‑1 German DIN / EN558‑1 British BS5163
Structure Length Short pattern Long pattern Exclusive BS5163 dimension
Flange Standard DIN‑EN1092‑2 PN10/PN16 DIN‑EN1092‑2 PN10/PN16 BS4504 PN10/PN16
Pressure Rating PN10, PN16 PN10, PN16 PN10, PN16
Typical Material GGG40/GGG50 ductile iron GGG40/GGG50 ductile iron GGG40/GGG50 ductile iron
Main Application Retrofit projects, limited space New municipal water pipeline UK & Commonwealth water projects

When making final selection, confirm three key points: existing pipeline face‑to‑face length, flange bolt dimension and project regional standard requirements. Never assume F4, F5 and BS5163 are mutually interchangeable merely because they are all resilient seated gate valves. For European mainland projects, F4 for replacement and F5 for new construction are preferred. For projects following British specifications, strictly stick to BS5163 standard to eliminate re‑working risk.
