GTA 6 Inspires 47-Year-Old Veteran Marketer Paul Andre de Vera to Become a Gamer for the First Time
The 20+ year digital marketer and livestream podcaster launches IRL DRE: Late to the Game, documenting his journey from Level 0 while turning the creation of a gaming brand into a live marketing case study for new gamers, marketers and creators.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, Calif. – September 3, 2026 – After more than 20 years building digital marketing, SEO, content, and audience-growth strategies, Paul Andre de Vera is taking on a completely different challenge at age 47: becoming a gamer for the first time.

De Vera has launched IRL DRE: Late to the Game, a new creator venture documenting his journey from virtually zero gaming experience to, hopefully, someone who can eventually call himself a gamer.

His starting point is intentionally simple:

47 YEARS IRL. LEVEL 0 IN GAME.

But Late to the Game is more than a gaming channel. De Vera plans to apply the marketing strategies, content systems, SEO knowledge, livestreaming experience, and audience-development principles he has learned throughout his professional career to build IRL DRE publicly from the ground up.

The result is two experiments happening at once: Can a 47-year-oldwith virtually no gaming experience learn to become a gamer? And can an experienced marketer build a creator brand from zero in an industry where he has no established authority?

Grand Theft Auto VI Finally Convinced de Vera to Pick Up the Controller

De Vera has been surrounded by gamers for years. Many of his friends and nephews play video games, while gaming remained a world he mostly observed from the outside.

The recent excitement around Grand Theft Auto VI finally changed that.

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuted on Netflix on August 27, 2026, before arriving on Rockstar’s official channels. The presentation was captured entirely from in-gamePlayStation 5 footage and showcased the next installment of the blockbuster franchise ahead of its scheduled November 19, 2026 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Seeing how far modern games had evolved made de Vera want to experience that world for himself rather than continue watching from the sidelines.

“I’ve watched my friends and nephews game for years, but I never really had the urge to jump in myself. Then all the GTA 6 hype started happening, and I watched the new extended GTA 6 feature on Netflix. I was like, wow… THIS is what video games look like now? That was pretty much the moment I decided it was finally time to see what I’vebeen missing. GTA 6 is what made me finally pull the trigger… pun absolutely intended.”

There was just one problem.

De Vera didn’t own a current-generation gaming console.

His attempt to buy a PlayStation 5 Pro immediately became part of the story when the console was sold out at the retailers he checked.

“I haven’t even become a gamer yet, and gaming is already pissing me off,” de Vera joked. “Bro, I just got here.”

That experience helped establish one of the guiding principles behind IRL DRE: Late to the Game: don’t manufacture the journey. Document what actually happens.

IRL DRE Starts With Virtually Zero Gaming Experience

Unlike established gaming creators who have spent years mastering games, de Vera sees his lack of experience as the project’s foundation.

“I’m not going to pretend I know what I’m doing. That would ruin the entire point. I’m 47, I’m starting at Level 0, and I want people to see the mistakes, frustration, learning, and hopefully the progression in real time.”

Rather than quietly learning in private, de Vera decided that becoming a beginner again would become the content itself.

Early content will document:

  • Learning how to properly use a modern game controller

  • Choosing and experiencing notable video games for the first time

  • Understanding gaming terminology and culture

  • Getting coached, challenged, and roasted by experienced gamers

  • Converting a spare storage room into his first dedicated gaming room

  • Experimenting with different genres, consoles and gaming experiences

  • Livestreaming successes, failures and unexpected moments

  • Exploring gaming from the perspective of someone starting after age45

  • Preparing to experience Grand Theft Auto VI as a genuinely new gamer

More Than 20 Years of Marketing Experience Meets a Brand-New Industry

While de Vera is a beginner at gaming, he is not a beginner at building audiences online.

Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has worked across SEO, digital marketing, content strategy, search marketing, and growth. He has also spent years producing and hosting livestreamed podcast content through the SEO Video Show.

With IRL DRE, he plans to apply that professional experience to a creator brand where he begins without gaming expertise or established authority.

That distinction is central to the experiment.

Instead of launching another marketing project in an industry where he already understands the audience and terminology, de Vera is deliberately entering a community where he must learn alongside the people watching him.

The Entire Venture Will Become a Live Marketing Case Study

De Vera plans to openly document not only his progress as a gamer but also how he builds and markets the IRL DRE brand.

The live case study will examine how an experienced marketer approaches a creator venture from Level 0:

  1. Brand positioning: Developing a recognizable identity around IRL DRE and Late to the Game.

  2. Content strategy: Turning individual experiences into long-formvideos, livestreams, short-form clips, and social conversations.

  3. Search optimization: Creating useful content around questionsfirst-time gamers and adults over 45 actually ask across Google, YouTube, and AI search platforms.

  4. Audience development: Testing how gaming content performs acrossplatforms and identifying which channels create meaningful audiencegrowth.

  5. Livestreaming: Applying de Vera’s experience as a livestream podcast host to an interactive gaming environment where viewers can coach and challenge him in real time.

  6. Community building: Allowing experienced gamers to influence the journey through recommendations, explanations, challenges, and feedback.

  7. Creator monetization: Exploring how a new creator identity can eventually expand into a website, merchandise, sponsorships, and other opportunities without sacrificing the authenticity of the experiment.

  8. Measurement: Documenting what works, what fails, and how the strategy changes as real data replaces assumptions.

There will be no fabricated success metrics or predetermined outcome.

If an experiment fails, the failure becomes part of the case study.

Dre.Live Establishes the Home Base for the Experiment

As part of the launch, de Vera created Dre.Live as the digital home for the IRL DRE project and registered the IRL DRE brand across the major social platforms. Rather than treating each channel as an isolated account, he is using the launch itself as an opportunity to test a fundamental creator-marketing question: what happens when the same core piece of content is systematically repurposed across multiple platforms?

During the initial test, de Vera repurposed the same short-form content across his social profiles using substantially the same descriptions and positioning. Early results have made YouTube Shorts and TikTok the most promising channels so far.

Those early signals are already influencing the next phase of the strategy.

“This is exactly how I would approach a marketing campaign professionally. I don’t want to decide where the audience is supposed to be. I want to publish, collect the data, and let the audience tell me where they actually are. So far, YouTube Shorts and TikTok are giving me the strongest early signals, and now I want to see if that carries over when I go live.”

Based on the early short-form performance, de Vera has decided to prioritize livestreaming on YouTube and TikTok, while also testing Twitch as a control platform in the case study.

Twitch Will Serve as a Livestreaming Control

Twitch presents an especially interesting comparison for the experiment.

De Vera could not use Twitch the same way he used the other platforms for his initial prerecorded short-form content test. Rather than removing Twitch from the experiment, he decided that limitation makes the platform a more useful livestream-focused control.

Twitch’s history as a platform built around live broadcasting also makes it relevant to a project centered on learning gaming in public.

The next phase will compare:

  1. YouTube: Whether early traction from Shorts can help introduce viewers to longer livestreams and the broader IRL DRE journey.

  2. TikTok: Whether promising short-form discovery can translate into live participation, repeat viewers, and community growth.

  3. Twitch: How a livestream-first platform performs when it does not benefit from the same prerecorded-content testing and repurposing strategy used on the other channels.

“Twitch is where livestreaming really became part of gaming culture, so I don’t want to leave it out just because I couldn’t run the exact same prerecorded-content test there. That actually makes it interesting. I’m going to throw Twitch in as the control and see what the data tells me.”

De Vera plans to document the results rather than assume that the largest platform, the most established gaming platform, or the channel generating the most short-form views will automatically become the best place to build a live community.

That platform comparison will become another component of the public IRL DRE marketing case study.

Marketers Can Follow the Experiment Alongside Gamers

The structure of Late to the Game gives the project two distinct but overlapping audiences.

For gamers, it is entertainment built around watching a complete beginner encounter experiences veteran players may take for granted.

For marketers, creators, and entrepreneurs, it is a real-time look at building a new brand in an unfamiliar vertical.

The experiment will explore questions including:

  • Can established marketing principles transfer into an unfamiliar creator niche?

  • How important is search when building a personality-drivenentertainment brand?

  • Can livestreaming accelerate community development?

  • Which social platforms generate meaningful audience growth for a new gaming creator?

  • Can traditional SEO and AI-search optimization help a new creator get discovered?

  • What happens when the audience becomes an active participant in the content?

  • How does a professional marketer adapt when the target audience understands the subject better than he does?

  • Which proven marketing strategies fail when applied to gaming and creator culture?

For de Vera, that last question may be as valuable as discovering what succeeds.

Becoming a Beginner Again Is Part of the Point

Behind the marketing experiment is a simpler idea.

After spending decades developing professional expertise, de Vera wanted to deliberately put himself in a situation where that expertise could not solve the immediate problem.

SEO knowledge cannot teach someone how to use a controller.

Marketing experience cannot beat a boss.

A personal brand cannot prevent an embarrassing multiplayer loss.

“I think when we get older, we naturally spend more time doing things we already know how to do. There’s something refreshing about saying, ‘I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing, but I’m going to learnanyway.'”

That mindset is also intended to speak directly to adults who are curious about gaming but believe they missed their opportunity to start.

Rather than answering the question theoretically, Late to the Game will test it publicly.

The Gaming Community Will Help Determine What Happens Next

IRL DRE will not follow a predetermined gaming curriculum.

De Vera wants experienced gamers to become part of the experiment itself.

Viewers will be encouraged to:

  • Recommend which games he should experience

  • Explain gaming terminology without assuming prior knowledge

  • Teach controller techniques

  • Suggest beginner-friendly challenges

  • Coach him during livestreams

  • Introduce him to important moments in gaming history

  • Roast his inevitable beginner mistakes

  • Help determine when he has legitimately earned the right to call himself a gamer

The ongoing question behind the project is intentionally unanswered:

How long does it take for a 47-year-old complete beginner to actually become a gamer?

There is only one way to find out.

Start playing.

IRL DRE Is Officially at Level 0

IRL DRE: Late to the Game begins in 2026 with de Vera at the very beginning of the journey.

No gaming résumé. No manufactured expertise. No pretending to know the answers.

Just a 47-year-old marketer, livestream podcaster, and creator willingly becoming a beginner again in public.

For longtime gamers, it is an opportunity to experience gaming through the eyes of someone seeing much of it for the first time.

For adults over 45, it is a reminder that there is no expiration date on starting something new.

For marketers and creators, IRL DRE will serve as a live case study in what happens when more than 20 years of professional marketing experience is applied to building a completely new creator brand from Level 0.

47 YEARS IRL. LEVEL 0 IN GAME.

The experiment has officially begun.
